October 3, 2025 — Houston, TX — The Houston Fire Department is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) for more than 100 years — and Convergentz, a leading provider of fire and life safety solutions, to promote this year’s FPW campaign: “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Business.” The campaign (October 5 – 11, 2025) emphasizes the importance of buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely.
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use daily — from smartphones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, and toys. While these batteries are efficient and convenient, they can pose serious fire risks if misused or damaged.
“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful and everywhere — but they must be handled with care,” said Kyle Jarnagin, General Manager of the Convergentz Fire and Life Safety Team. “We’re proud to support the Houston Fire Department and NFPA in raising awareness about battery safety. This campaign is about helping customers understand how to use these batteries safely and prevent avoidable fires.”
The campaign encourages businesses to follow three key safety actions:
Buy Only Listed Products
- Look for products tested by a nationally recognized lab.
- Avoid off-brand or uncertified products that may not meet safety standards.
Charge Devices Safely
- Use only the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge on hard, flat surfaces — never on couches, or under pillows.
- Unplug devices once fully charged to avoid overheating.
Recycle Batteries Responsibly
- Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins.
- Visit call2recycle.org to find a safe battery recycling location near you.
