Houston, TX, October 3, 2024 – With Fire Prevention Week quickly approaching from October 6-12, 2024, the Convergentz Fire & Life Safety Team is urging all homeowners and building owners to check that their smoke alarms are in proper working condition. This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You! ™,” emphasizes the life-saving role of smoke alarms in both homes and businesses.
In partnership with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), which has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) for over a century, Convergentz aims to raise awareness about the critical importance of maintaining functional smoke alarms.
According to the NFPA, having working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than 50%. Unfortunately, nearly 60% of home fire deaths occur in properties without working smoke alarms or no smoke alarms at all.
“Smoke alarms are essential in both homes and workplaces, but they must be properly maintained to provide protection,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of outreach and advocacy. “This year’s campaign highlights the simple but important steps that can be taken to ensure that smoke alarms are installed and operational in all the necessary areas.”
The Convergentz team encourages everyone to actively support Fire Prevention Week by following these essential smoke alarm safety tips:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home, including basements.
- Accommodate family members with sensory or physical disabilities by ensuring alarms meet their needs.
- Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button to confirm they are functioning.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years to ensure they remain effective.
Kyle Jarnagin, General Manager of the Convergentz Fire & Life Safety Team, added, “Working smoke alarms provide vital early warnings in the event of a fire, giving people precious time to evacuate safely. We can work with building owners in making sure their properties are equipped with the right alarms and are compliant with safety codes.”
